What a UK Marriage Certificate is

A UK marriage certificate is an official record that two people are married. It confirms identity and marital status. It shows names, date and place of marriage, and the issuing authority.

Do you need notarisation or an apostille?

  • GRO-issued certificate (England and Wales): carries an official registrar signature. It usually does not need notarisation for an apostille. We submit it to the FCDO for legalisation.
  • Certificates not issued by the GRO (church, registrar substitute, or overseas body): do not carry the registrar’s signature. These need notarisation first, then apostille. We verify authenticity with the issuing body before sealing.
  • Religious ceremonies in England and Wales: some are not civilly registered. Ensure a civil registration is completed so that a GRO certificate exists and can be legalised.

FAQs

Do GRO certificates need a notary?
Usually it is not required to get an apostille. The registrar’s signature is recognised by the FCDO. Some destinations still ask for translation and the translation to be Notarised and aspostilled. Check with the receiving authority.

Can you notarise a church-issued certificate?
Yes. We verify the record with the issuer, notarise, then secure an apostille.

How fast is the apostille?
Around 48 hours in standard cases. Complex checks or consular legalisation can take longer.

Do you handle translations?
Yes. We provide certified translations that meet foreign authority standards. Some countries like Spain will ask to only use a translator from their verified translators.

Can you work by post?
Yes. UK-wide service by post or courier with tracked return.

Is a photocopy acceptable?
Many authorities ask for an original or a notarised copy. We advise on the correct format before submission.
