Indian documents may not require Apostille
India is a member of the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents — commonly called the Apostille Convention.
India joined the Convention on 14 July 2005, and the treaty entered into force for India on 14 August 2005.
This means that documents originating from another member country (such as the UK) and bearing an Apostille issued by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) are recognised in India without further consular attestation by the Indian High Commission.
- FCDO Apostille: We secure the mandatory Apostille from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office on your behalf.
- Certified Translation: We engage a qualified, UK-based professional to produce a certified Indian translation of your documents.
While India is a Hague member, some Indian authorities, banks, and courts still require additional verification for practical or procedural reasons. In particular:
-
Power of Attorney documents intended for use in property, inheritance, or court matters in India must still be attested at the Indian High Commission or VFS Global centre in the UK, even if apostilled.
-
Commercial or corporate documents may be accepted with just an Apostille, depending on the specific Indian authority or use case.

⚠️ Important: Although India is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, Powers of Attorney and certain legal documents must still be attested by the Indian High Commission or VFS Global after Apostille for acceptance by Indian authorities.
Documents such as a UK Birth Certificate, Death Certificate, Marriage Certificate, ACRO Police Certificate, and others only require the Apostille without the need for notarisation or further attestation.
We make submissions to the FCDO standard counter through our Apostille registered agents in Milton Keynes every day, meaning we will submit your documents the same day you get them notarised.
