What Is a Power of Attorney for Use in India?

We at iNotary, London’s Notary Public can assist in notarising Powers of Attorney (POA) and other legal documents for use in India.

We manage Indian Power of Attorney matters on a daily basis, working directly with clients submitting through the Indian High Commission and VFS Global centres across London to ensure full compliance and smooth processing.

When preparing a Power of Attorney (POA) for use in India, it’s essential to follow the official requirements set by the Indian High Commission and VFS Global.

Please ensure the following steps are completed carefully:

    • The signing page of the Power of Attorney must be signed by you and two witnesses.

    • Each witness must provide the following details on the signing page:
            • Full name
            • Address
            • Date of birth
            • Passport nationality and type
            • Passport issue date and expiry date
            • Passport number

    • Do not include a section for the attorney to sign. The Indian High Commission will reject any POA that contains a blank acceptance or acknowledgment section.
    • Affix a passport-sized photograph of yourself next to your signature on the signing page and sign across the photo once it is attached.
    • Leave the bottom half of the signing page blank — this space is reserved for the India House legalisation stamp.
    • Witnesses may sign on the same page as you or on a separate page that clearly lists their full details.
    • Witnesses must self-certify their ID copies (passport and proof of address) by signing each page of the copy.
    • Do not abbreviate names — all names must be written in full (e.g., Suresh Kumar Jagnesh, not Suresh K. Jagnesh).
    • Each witness must provide proof of address (such as a utility bill or UK photo driving licence), self-certified by that witness.
        • If a witness is not a UK passport holder, include a copy of their Residence Permit, self-certified by that witness.

    • If your Power of Attorney refers to a court case, attach a notarised copy of the relevant court document showing the case reference number.
    • Use witnesses who are British or Indian passport holders only — the Indian High Commission may reject POAs witnessed by individuals of other nationalities.
